B6.7.1 Waste management

Code: C6.29

Adequate, ventilated rubbish and recycling facilities must be provided within buildings or other structures (such as screened and secure timber bin stores) to ensure all refuse bins are contained and do not obstruct streets or pavements.

Guidance: G6.18

Waste storage should:

  • be located to the rear or side of buildings, with careful consideration of the area’s use and visibility to protect and enhance the overall quality of the place

  • be effectively screened and sited to ensure safe, convenient access, especially within service yards

  • include designated priority zones around bin stores to ensure user safety during waste collection and servicing. These zones should provide clear, unobstructed space for safe operations, feature good visibility and lighting, and incorporate traffic management or pedestrian segregation measures where necessary to prevent conflicts

Exception: Where sites cannot be accessed and collected by a waste collection vehicle in a public or private capacity, waste collection points should be located within 25 metres of the public highway. This should be discussed and agreed with the Council where required to ensure such locations are acceptable.
