B6.6.3 Car parking design and integration

Code: C6.27

Car parking and service yards must be located to the rear or side of buildings to maintain active and engaging street frontages. If parking or servicing must be located along the main frontage due to space or operational constraints, it must be well screened with a minimum 3 metre wide landscaped buffer featuring layered planting to soften its visual impact. External lighting and CCTV coverage must be also be indicated and provided, with overlooking from office windows to increase surveillance.

Exception: Where it is not possible to locate both parking and service yards away from the main frontage, developments must prioritise locating car parking to the front of the building, with service yards positioned to the side or rear.

Guidance: G6.14

The car parking provision and layout within industrial or commercial developments should ensure that overspill car parking does not occur on access roads, off-site streets or roads

Guidance: G6.15

Parking areas and forecourts should be properly laid out, drained and hard surfaced. A range of surface materials may be acceptable, provided they are durable, stable, and

appropriate for vehicular use. However, loose materials such as hardcore, crushed stone, or gravel should be avoided due to their practical limitations, including displacement, uneven surfaces, and accessibility issues and should not be utilised within 2 metres of the highway.
