B5.9.3 Car parking standards

Code: C5.33

New development must meet the minimum standards for parking provision as outlined in District-Wide Cycle and Other Parking Standards (Appendix 7). Manual for Streets (published by the Department for Transport) outlines the considerations that applicants need to take into account when proposing on-street parking.

Detailed guidance on the provision of car parking for motorists with disabilities and bay design can be found within Section 5 of Inclusive Mobility a Guide to Best Practice on Access to Pedestrian and Transport Infrastructure (published by the Department for Transport).

Guidance: G5.37

Householder applications should meet the minimum standards for parking provision as outlined in District-Wide Cycle and Other Parking Standards (Appendix 7).

Note that whilst permitted development rights allow for some parking-related improvements, it is crucial to check the specific rules and regulations related to your home and the proposed development with the Council (for example permitted development rights do not apply to works on a public highway). Section 184 of the Highways Act outlines the process for obtaining permission for vehicle’s access over a footway or verge, which involves a S184 agreement with the Council’s Highway Authority as required.

Code: C5.34

Car parking must be considered as an integral part of the overall design of a scheme, and not considered as an “add-on” or a detailed issue to be left to the end of the design process. Designated parking locations must be convenient for residents, and visible from their homes.
