B4.1.2 Connected schools

Code: C4.6

Routes to schools must be designed to provide safe and convenient access for children and their guardians travelling by active modes. This may include high-quality surfacing, sufficiently wide footways, dropped kerbs, clearly marked and safe crossing points, and effective traffic calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds.

Code: C4.7

Proposed school sites must provide for safe and well-managed drop-off and pick-up arrangements within the school grounds, supported by appropriate traffic management measures. Proposed car parking and drop-off areas must:

  • comply with District-Wide Cycle and Other Parking Standards (Appendix 7)

  • be located away from the primary pedestrian entrance

  • include a safe and direct walking route from the drop-off area to the schools primary entrance

  • be designed to minimise conflict between reversing vehicles and pedestrians, ideally through one-way circulation or dedicated turning areas

Code: C4.8

All new school development must meet the standards for cycle parking provision as set out within District-Wide Cycle and Other Parking Standards (Appendix 7).

Code: C4.9

Communal cycle parking provision for newly proposed schools must:

  • provide a minimum 30% of spaces that are Sheffield-type stands that must be supplied to cover all provisions

  • incorporate a minimum of 5% of stands at 1 metre spacing to accommodate non-standard and adapted cycles, such as accessible bikes, scooters and cargo bikes

  • be covered and located within 50 metres of the primary entrance

  • be well-overlooked and lit to maintain passive surveillance and user safety

  • have safe and segregated access from motorised transport

  • provide a floor- or wall-mounted public bike pump (gas powered) where more than 40 cycle spaces are provided

  • provide a public bike pump and repair tool station where more than 80 spaces are provided

  • ensure that staff cycle parking is separate and located near the staff block to provide convenient access to showering facilities

  • not be accessed through, form part of, or be directly adjacent to any waste storage area
