B2.7.1 Sensitively integrating photovoltaics (PV’s)

Guidance: G2.33

Where PV’s are proposed, they should be integrated seamlessly into the building’s design, using one or more of the following approaches:

  • PV’s set flush within the roof structure where this does not dominate the roof plane

  • PV tiles that match the size, colour, and bond of the surrounding roof tiles

  • PV’s grouped neatly and aligned with roof elements to avoid piecemeal or asymmetrical arrangements

Care should be taken to ensure that added height from PV installations is considered in relation to local views and roofline appearance.

On sites with historic sensitivity (including listed buildings and sites within or adjacent to conservation areas) proposals should follow Historic England’s guidance on retrofitting low and zero carbon technologies (Adapting Historic Buildings for Energy and Carbon Efficiency: Advice Note 18).
