The unique character and context of our local areas play a big part in making the District a great place to be. The codes within this section are here to help applicants think about what makes an area special and how to build upon its strengths. They will also help to shape design ideas and outcomes that truly fit and enhance the local context when considering places and spaces.

At the start of the design process, understanding the place is a vital step when considering designing anything new.

Key views contribute to the unique character of a place, creating visual connections between a new development and its wider surroundings.

B1.5 Interfaces & boundary edges

Interfaces and boundary edges can form how differing parts of a place come together, guiding the way buildings and differing landscapes meet.

Taking inspiration from local buildings, architecture, materials, and detailing helps new buildings resonate with their surroundings whilst adding their own distinct character.
